Maria J. Bustamante is a researcher at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, focusing on how digital technologies are encouraging new forms of collaboration and the incorporation of values such as sustainability and resiliency into the food system by establishing new business models and new markets, with a special focus on vertical farming. She recently defended her PhD thesis at the Stockholm School of Economics titled, Agricultural Intelligence: Valuing digital technology in the agri-food sector transition to sustainability. The research unpacks how actors in the agri-food system evaluate and value nascent digital technologies. It argues that how values are measured (or not) should be given greater consideration in innovation processes, indicating that social elements, not just technical elements, will have an impact on whether new technologies will be adaptive or transformative.
